conversation analysis

Current Definition
(from George Psathas, Conversation Analysis, Sage 1995): the study of talk-in-interaction; it takes up the problem of studying social life in situ, examining naturally occurring activities in their concrete details. (Including greetings, closings, paired utterances, etc.) CA studies the order/organization/orderliness of social action. Social actions . . .are practical actions and are to be examined as ongoing practical accomplishments. CA originated in sociology, but is said to have implications for a variety of fields, including cognitive science.
